![]() ![]() Even the titular Nutcracker himself has a smaller role that I wished could of been explanded. Coming back to my point about lack of character development though I felt the film spent so much time with Clara and The Sugar Plum Fairy that audiences will have had no chance in guessing the twist because we barely saw much of Mother Ginger to be able to guess her true intentions. Knightley played the Sugar Plum Fairy so sweetly it was an interesting twist and I honestly cannot recall seeing Knightley portray a villian before- nevertheless she did a good job. On the subject of Mother Ginger, the plot twist that it was in fact The Sugar Plum Fairy and not her who was the true villian was something I didn’t see coming. The film itself however was on the shorter side (being just over 90 minutes) and I would of enjoy more focus and development on other characters– particularly Mother Ginger who I felt we knew very little about. Making Clara a budding inventor (giving her very Violet Baudelaire vibes) make her an interesting heroine- a heroine who was easily capable of saving the day herself- even if she didn’t quite know it yet. Story wise, I enjoyed Clara’s jouney through the four realms and I particulary enjoyed her character. The amount of detail and precision in every shot was breathtaking and I really felt like I too was in the world of The Nutcracker. The work that went in to creating each of the four realms as well as Clara’s real-life home back in London was second to none. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms was such a visual beauty. Clara tasks herself with ontaining the key in order to save each realm- but can she truly become the hero that everyone needs? Sugar Plum tells Clara of a machine that can turn toys to real life and vice-versa but it needs a key to work, the same key needed for Clara’s egg box and that Mother Ginger currently has. The regents inform Clara that her mother was the Queen and creator of the land and that Mother Ginger was once the fourth regent but has since been banished for trying to take over the whole land. Grant), and Hawthorne of the Land of Flowers (Eugenio Derbez). Returning over the bridge, The Nutcracker takes Clara to the palace where she meets the three regents of each land- The Sugar Plum Fairy of the Land of Sweets (Kiera Knightley), Shivers of the Land of Snowflakes (Richard E. Clara, now joined by The Nutcracker continue to chase the mouse, but are ambushed by The Mouse King and Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren) who try to stop her. Following close behind Clara soon looses the mouse as it crosses a bridge, here Clara meets The Nutcracker (Jayden Fowora-Knight) who informs her she is in fact Princess of the land. In this new snow-filled place, Clara continues to follow the rope eventually finding the missing key, before she can take it however it is stolen by a mouse who runs off through the trees. Later on at the party, Clara follows a piece of rope through the house to find her Christmas presents, the rope however leads down a dark tunnel- taking her through a hollow tree into a seemingly magical world. Clara enlists Drosselmeyer’s help in opening the box but he tells her she needs to find the right key. Annoyed that she can’t open the box and hesitant to celebrate Christmas, Clara heads to a Christmas Eve ball hosted by her Godfather and fellow inventor Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman). Also in the box is a note stating the egg is “All she would ever need”. As Clara and her family approach their first Christmas without their mother Clara and her siblings recieve early presents intended to be given to them by their mother, Clara recieves an egg shaped box with a keyhole but no key. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms follows Clara (Mackenzie Foy), a budding inventor whose mother Marie (Anna Madeley) has recently passed away. So naturally when it was announced that Disney would be taking on this classic tale I was so excited- the story has such a magical touch so I was intriuged to see Disney put their own spin on it. I have been a massive fan of The Nutcracker story since I was a child, being most familiar with the 1990 animated version- The Nutcracker Prince. ![]() SPOILER WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS, READ WITH CAUTION. ![]()
